What we collect
Your account. Your name, @username, and the email address or phone number you sign in with. If you use a password we store it only in hashed form. If you sign in with Apple or Google we receive your name and email from them.
Your profile. Anything you add: profile and cover photos, bio, home city, and optional details such as birthday, gender, pronouns and languages.
What you share. Pins, ratings, reviews, photos, comments, your bucket list, who you follow, likes, and reports you send us.
Location. If you allow it, the app uses your device's location while you're using it — never in the background — to show where you are and find places nearby. Your position is sent to our servers to answer those requests; we don't keep a history of where you've been. We do save a default map location if you choose one in Settings or during sign-up.
Technical data. A push-notification token for your device, your device type, the IP address and app details of each signed-in session, a record of how the app is used (for example which screens are opened), and crash and performance reports.
We don't access your contacts, and the app only sees the photos you choose to upload.
How we use it
- To run your account, sign you in and keep it secure.
- To show your pins, photos and reviews to other travelers, and theirs to you.
- To send the codes, emails and notifications you ask for.
- To find places, show maps and suggest spots near you.
- To keep the community safe: review reports, remove content that breaks our rules, and stop abuse.
- To fix bugs and make the app faster and easier to use.
What other people can see
Other signed-in travelers can see your @username, profile photo, cover photo, bio, home city, follower counts, travel style, and the pins, photos and reviews you share. Your real name is only shown if you turn on Show my name. Your email, phone number, birthday, gender, pronouns and languages are never shown on your profile.
A pin can be shared by link; anyone with the link can see that pin's page on gotravelmap.com. You control who can comment on your pins and tag you in Settings → Privacy.
Who helps us run Go Travel
We don't sell or rent your personal information, and we don't use advertising or third-party analytics tools. We share data only with the service providers that run the app for us, and only what each one needs:
- Fly.io — hosts our servers (United States).
- Neon — our database.
- Cloudflare R2 — stores the photos you upload.
- Twilio — sends sign-in codes by text message.
- Resend — sends sign-in links, email verification and password-reset emails.
- Apple and Google — sign-in, if you choose them.
- Expo — delivers push notifications.
- Mapbox and Google Maps Platform — maps and place search. They receive what you search for and, when location is on, your approximate position.
- Sentry — crash and performance reports. A small share of app sessions is recorded as a replay with all text and images hidden.
- Inngest — runs scheduled jobs, such as deleting accounts.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, or as part of a merger or sale of Go Travel, in which case this policy keeps applying to your data.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and what you share for as long as your account is open. Sessions on a device last up to a year unless you log out. Some records can be kept after your account is deleted: those we need for safety, such as reports about content and a history of username changes, and basic usage records. They no longer carry your name or contact details.
Deleting your account
In the app, go to Profile → Settings → Account → Delete account. Your profile is hidden and you're signed out on every device right away. If you sign back in within 30 days, the deletion is cancelled.
After 30 days we permanently delete:
- your name, email, phone number, profile details and sign-in methods;
- every profile photo and cover photo you uploaded — the files themselves, not just the links to them;
- your sessions, device tokens, follows, blocks, bucket list, settings, notifications and likes.
If you turn on Erase my pins and reviews too, your pins, their photo files and your comments are deleted as well. If you don't, they stay on the map credited to "Deleted traveler", with nothing that identifies you.
You can also ask us to delete your account by emailing support@gotravelmap.com if you no longer have the app.
Your choices and rights
- Edit your profile and what you've shared at any time.
- Turn location, camera, photos and notifications on or off in your phone's settings.
- Choose who can comment on your pins and tag you, and block people, in Settings → Privacy.
- Ask for a copy of your data, a correction, or deletion by emailing support@gotravelmap.com.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under laws such as the GDPR or California privacy law. We'll honour them — just email us.
Security
Data travels to and from Go Travel over encrypted connections, sign-in sessions are stored securely on your device, and passwords are never stored in plain text. No service is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password if you set one.
This website
gotravelmap.com doesn't use advertising or analytics cookies. We collect error reports from the site to fix problems.
Children
Go Travel is not for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email support@gotravelmap.com and we'll delete it.
Where your data is stored
Go Travel is run from the United States and our providers may process data in other countries. By using the app, you understand your information will be handled in the United States and those countries.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top of this page, and for important changes we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. The current version always lives at gotravelmap.com/privacy.
